Find your apprenticeship authority
The Government of Canada maintains a directory of provincial and territorial apprenticeship programs. Use it to reach the official authority where you plan to train.

Choose your province or territory
Start with the authority where you plan to train. These links come from the Government of Canada’s provincial and territorial directory; Ontario’s link goes directly to Skilled Trades Ontario.
What to check before applying
- The trade name and code. Similar job titles can have different training and certification routes.
- The entry route. Ask whether you need a sponsor first, school admission first, or another application step.
- Your education and experience. Confirm what documents the authority needs and whether prior learning can be assessed.
- Work and classroom locations. Plan for both parts of training before choosing a program.
Canada’s starting guide identifies a different sequence in Quebec, where classroom training comes before workplace training. Follow the local route rather than assuming the Ontario process applies everywhere.
Understand the Red Seal Program
The Red Seal Program develops common standards and examinations for participating trades. Passing the exam leads to a Red Seal endorsement that recognizes the national standard in that trade. Check your provincial authority for the route to certification.
